The Princess of Wales's Traditional Festive Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The 1,600 guests will enjoy a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Focusing on Compassion and Love

The theme of the concert, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a message before the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her first public speech for two years, in which she discussed recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Musical Talent and Access

Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, co-founded by the former royal to widen access to musical tuition.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been supported by the trust, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at tonight's service.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for community pantries.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on a major network on Christmas Eve.
