India's capital Wakes Up to Toxic Smog Post Celebrations
On Tuesday morning residents of the world's most polluted city found themselves inhaling severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" range.
Extremely High Pollution Readings
Several parts of the capital showed an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times above safe levels.
Fireworks Restrictions and New Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the deadly pollution that covers the city as the cold season sets in.
However earlier this year, the current regional administration petitioned the highest court to request a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

Within these states, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating toxic haze that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air arrives.
Health and Economic Consequences
Public health and economic consequences on the nearly 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to various investigations.
The contaminated air causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing ten thousand untimely deaths annually in Delhi.
