The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
